Tony, Emmy Winner Barnard Hughes Dies
Actor Was 90

NEW YORK -- Tony and Emmy-winning actor Barnard Hughes is dead at age 90.

Hughes died Tuesday at New York Presbyterian Hospital after a brief illness, according to a family spokesman.

Hughes had a long career on Broadway dating back to 1935. He won a Tony for his portrayal of the curmudgeonly title character in Hugh Leonard's play "Da,"

He also appeared in numerous films, including "Midnight Cowboy" and "Oh, God!" "Doc Hollywood," and "Sister Act 2."

The versatile actor also worked in television, starting out in the early days and eventually snagging his Emmy for a guest role on "Lou Grant."

Fans of "All in the Family" will remember Hughes as the priest whose car Edith dents with a can of cling peaches.

A family spokesman said Hughes died in New York City after a brief illness.

Survivors include his wife of more than 50 years, Helen Stenborg, whom he met while performing in a veteran's hospital show.

He was also in TRON, as I recall.

Yes, his character in Tron was Dr. Walter Gibbs in the real world and Dumont in the computer world.

He was also Max Merlin in the series "Mr. Merlin" which ran in 1981. I loved the show, but was evidently among only a handful that did.

IMDb has a list of 93 titles in which he had a role of films and TV episodes.

It always amazes me that I can hear a name and say, "Huh?" But seeing a photo of the person brings a flood of memories of the roles he played.
