Johnny Carson, King of Late Night, Dies
By JEFF WILSON, Associated Press Writer
LOS ANGELES - Johnny Carson, the "Tonight Show" TV host who served America a smooth nightcap of celebrity banter, droll comedy and heartland charm for 30 years, has died. He was 79. "Mr. Carson passed away peacefully early Sunday morning [January 23rd]," his nephew, Jeff Sotzing, told The Associated Press. "He was surrounded by his family, whose loss will be immeasurable. There will be no memorial service."

A more recent article said the cause of death was emphysema.
Emphysema and COPD took my own father at 68. Frelling cigarettes.

That's a shame. He was a great host.
I quit those nasty ciggies, so shouldnt have to worry about it.
(5months and counting)

My dad, as well, only he made it to 78, dragging his oxygen bottle everywhere he went.

Once my dad was on oxygen, he didn't really go anywhere, except to the doctor, and out on the porch. Get this... to smoke.
He would actually take the oxygen tubing from his nose and put it up on his forehead and smoke! My mother was afraid he'd blow something up, but the doctor said all it would do is make the cigs burn down faster.
He finally got to the point where he felt sick whenever he smoked, and quit a few months before he passed away. Much too late. Three packs a day, from 15 to 67. Pretty much no chance of recovering from that.
