They've been working on this vertical take-off jet idea for generations now. The US even has/had one in service. Only minor problem is they keep crashing.

Arnold used a Harrier, which is a British creation, I believe. The Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) was an international competition between the big defense contractors to develop the "fighter of tomorrow". It was supposed to replace all the various other aging F- series fighters in our arsenal. What the competition bore out was that the JSF's created, though nifty, cost WAY more than intended, and that to be that nifty you cannot be lightweight, which was a design goal. The competition wasn't entirely successful, but lessons learned in the JSF effort will surely be used in new fighter designs. The Lockheed F-35 is a direct descendant of the JSF competition.
