A Request

Post by Xjmt » Mon Jun 28, 2004 2:48 pm

The computers of people I know are being slaughtered lately by worms and viruses and probably even spyware. Please, please, please if you don't already have a virus checker (kept up to date), a firewall and a spyware program please get them, like yesterday! All of these programs can be upgraded on a regular basis and should.

The computer you save may be your own.

Thank you. :ghug:

Yup. There are some pretty nasty ones out there right now, and the web is suddenly inundated with them.

Just a few moments ago I got one labled DAEMON-EMAIL RETURN or something like that. You know, the electronic equivalent of "Return to Sender, Address Unknown" but this one had an attachment (.scr or something like that) and said my email address had been used to send spam.

NO CHANCE!

I would strongly urge all to not open that one. :-P :flame:

Thank you and keep up the good work.

OK, I have to go with another warning here. Recently after doing some business via computer the very next day I received what appeared to be emails from those businesses.

The emails stated (differently but meaning much the same) that there was confusion over my account and if I didn't clear it up I'd have to be cancelled. They included a form for me to fill out which included name, address, SSN, credit card number, etc. I knew one was a scam because I had just ordered from that company and to do so I had to then confirm the information in my account. But the other transaction was brand new so I was tempted until I notice the top of the email form said something about click here for help with this form. That button went nowhere. So I contacted the company by phone and they indeed had been having problems with hackers ripping off their customers. They requested a copy of the scam email and I sent it along. Unfilled.

As I know Yahoo, Prodigy and Compuserve have mentioned many times in the past they will NEVER ask for personal info via email. If you contact them and are required to fill out a form that's one thing. Do NOT fill out forms you get as email. PLEASE.

The credit rating you save may be your own.

The thing to remember is:
The "Legitimate" companies you deal with will not ask you for personal information in an email. They will direct you to their site.
There is a problem with paypal. People download their homepage and use it as a front. If you get an email asking you to update your information, do not follow any links in the email. Use the one you already have on your computer to find out if it's legit or not.

From time to time I, too, have had that feeling. :flame: But as Trucker says you just have to be more aware and alert then you would like to have to be while relaxing over a heated debate on the internet with your enemies.....er, friends. Whatever...... :scratchhead:
