More quark news!

Detecting the Traces of Mystery Matter
Using high-speed collisions between gold atoms, scientists think they have re-created one of the most mysterious forms of matter in the universe -- quark-gluon plasma. This form of matter was present during the first microsecond of the Big Bang and may still exist at the cores of dense, distant stars.

I can just see it now. Before the end of the year TV & 'puter manufacturers will be touting their screens containing quark--gluon plasma! :dozy:

New method for quantum cooling discovered
Physicists at The University of Texas at Austin have discovered a new technique for cooling atoms and molecules that will allow them to study quantum physics more effectively with a greater variety of particles.
(They've discovered Maxwell's demon!)

Tricorder, anybody? :)

Lasers Key to Handheld Gas and Liquid Sensors
Using small quantum cascade lasers, researchers at Tech, along with colleagues from Tel-Aviv University and OmniGuide Communications, have built and demonstrated a prototype handheld gas phase chemical sensing device and a liquid phase sensing device.

With the original Star Trek, the only science we don't have that they have, is the transporter and the warp drive. We have some version of just about everything else. We even have flip phones....

The biggest problem of any of the Star Trek series is keeping ahead of existing developing science and technology.

Unless, of course, it's a prequal which they managed to screw up anyway. :crying:

They'd also have to avoid inspiring the new technology... ;)
