Truncated Titles

Not a suggestion, really, more of an observation and a question as to why this particular oddity happens, if anyone knows.

I've found that when you use double quotes (" ") in a thread title, the allowable length of the title is shortened. I get around it by editing it and using single quotes (' ') when I see that my title has been truncated.

Here's an example of a thread where the title was chopped off:

The title of that thread is "The Triangle" question for someone who sat throug.

If single quotes had been used, it could have been 'The Triangle' question for someone who sat through the whole thing and eats peanuts.

Verbose? Who, and by who I mean which respected user of the Trucker2000 Show Place Forum, do you think, imagine, or otherwise believe, is one to use, employ or include an excess or abundance of wordly verbiage?

My guess would be that for a title, it replaces the quote with some sequence of characters - perhaps &quote;

That's possible. Sometimes when a title gets truncated, the last character displayed is an ampersand.

For example, I try to put in BATTLESTAR GALACTICA -- "Fragged" and "Resistance" 9/24

and get something like BATTLESTAR GALACTICA -- "Fragged" and "Resis&.

Cause they aint said no bad words.

This was an interesting find.
Ok, my test results show that you may put 60 letters/numbers in the title. That's total. The program will cut you off after that. This includes single quotes. (')
But, with double quotes (") You may only have 55 letters/numbers.
I don't know what the cause is, unless it's just that the program doesn't like double quotes in the title. (which may be a security thing)

So,if'nyawannabelongwindedinthetitle,makesurenottousedoublequotes.

Probably not a security thing so much as how the software manages strings. You can't have a " within a string because it usually is used to terminate a string (null characters notwithstanding), so it is replaced, as Henry pointed out, with some kind of code.

I wonder, the 60 down to 55 experiment... Did that only have one " in the title? If you had two, would the total have been brought down another five characters. Five letters in quote, by the way...

No. That was with a quote on both ends.
I did a test thread with the following:

0123456789 etc....
The program allowed 60 numbers.
I did a second test as follows:
'1234567890123 etc...and at the end.. 78' (equaled 60 spaces)
Worked fine.
Then did the test again by substituting the ' with " but the last 5 spaces were removed.
I hadn't thought about the way that the program looks at strings. Interesting. If I can ever get some time to work with the program again, (I'm only 3 upgrades behind again,

I wouldn't worry about it. Not so much a problem, really, as an oddity.
