Deciphering the Mystery of Bee Flight Although the issue is not as profound as how the universe began or what kick-started life on earth, the physics of bee flight has perplexed scientists for more than 70 years. In 1934, in fact, French entomologist August Magnan and his assistant André Sainte-Lague calculated that bee flight was aerodynamically impossible. The haphazard flapping of their wings simply shouldn't keep the hefty bugs aloft.
(Besides perplexed, were they also
bugged, perhaps?)

UMass Amherst Researcher Finds Bird That Can Mimic Others in Context To Apparently Signal Alarm Imitation of other species is one of the most intriguing and mysterious aspects of birdsong. Often — as in the case of mockingbirds — there seems to be little connection between what the bird is imitating and what it is doing at that moment. But in the rainforests of Sri Lanka, a bird that travels in mixed-species flocks has learned to use the calls of other species in the same contexts that those species use them.

Genome sequencing is for ecology, too An organism widely used for genetics-versus-environment studies has joined the panoply of mice, rats, dogs, humans and other species whose entire genomes have been sequenced. [...] announced they've completed a "shotgun" sequence for Daphnia pulex, or the water flea [...]
(Cute little guys, huh? Kind of transparent, though. )

The first genome-wide screen for protein complexes is completed Today researchers in Germany announce they have finished the first complete analysis of the "molecular machines" in one of biology’s most important model organisms: S. cerevisiae [baker’s yeast].
(Yeast? Guess they got a rise out of that... )

UCLA Scientists Analyze 650-Million-Year-Old Fossils UCLA paleobiologist J. William Schopf and colleagues have produced 3-D images of ancient fossils — 650 million to 850 million years old — preserved in rocks, an achievement that has never been done before.
